Privet is a really tough plant but everything needs a little cosseting when it is newly planted.

If you have watered and cared for them properly the only thing I can think of is that you might have put in a bit too much fertiliser which can damage the roots. If you think this might be the case then just keep watering well - but don't drown them.

Privet is a Semi-evergreen plant which in a severe winter will shed it's leaves. Small plants such as you planted do have a tendancy to drop leaves. Most of the plants that we are selling have dropped most of their leaves but are still alive.
Do not feed them especially at this time of year as you will encourage new growth that will be hit by any frost or cold wind. As long as they have not dried out they should be ok. Check them by lightly scraping the bark on the stem. Before you get to the hard wood you should see some green tissue. If you see green tissue the plant is alive.
To finish Privet will grow in most situations from full sun to dense shade but the one thing they don't like is alkaline soil. Buy a small soil test kit (£1.25) and check what soil you have, this could be the cause.
Hope this helps you.
