The Philadelphia Experiment! Actually this is an urban legend that was a book and made into a movie. The ship that the movie is about was never even in Philadelphia!

The Philadelphia Experiment was an alleged naval military experiment at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sometime around the date of October 28, 1943, in which the U.S. destroyer escort USS Eldridge was to be rendered invisible to human observers for a brief period of time. It is also referred to as Project Rainbow. When tried all members of the crew execept 2 people were killed and the 2 left wound up in the desert after time traveling.
The book has dual authors William Moore and Charles Berlitz.

Sounds interesting. If you ask this question at one of these sites you might be able to get a title and author.

alibris.com
or
bibliotec.com
if these sites don't do it for you, you might want to ask this question of the librarian at the Library of Congress' website--
www.loc.gov
