Before answering, may I ask you another questions. Aside Philosophy, which between science and religon can best explain 'Melancholy'? How about 'Art'? And 'Friend.' And oh! Our good old pal... 'Life'?
You know, such words that we ASSOCIATE with a day-to-day basis, but we never stop once to think of there meaning.
I mean really. If I would tell someone to explain Love to me, I'll probably get a million explainations. But not the one I'm looking for because I, myself, don't know which one that is.
So, can Philosophy explain love. I don't really know. I mean, can you explain the love that a 4 year-old girl had for her own room? Or how about the love that a mother had for her child. Or maybe even that love that two individuals, when ssing each other, just felt a connection. I don't know, but I don't think philosophy can explain love either, let alone Science and Religon. I mean try explaining the love that I had for my dog and then one day I had to sell him???? You can't. You never can with these words. So, science and religon can't even cross that path because THEY can't even explain THEMSELVES.
But I'll tell you one think, The only thing that can explain love is that 4 year old girl, or that mother, or those two individuals, or two 80- year old husband and wife who have been living with each other for 60 years. Or me. Because I have loved. And all these people have also loved. And if you have ever loved, then trust me, you can also explain it
But hey, the thing is, no one wants to explain it. I mean, why would they. If they're so special as to explain one of the biggest mysteries in this world, why should they. But I think its just because they're too busy. Too busy finding WHAT to actually explain to you about this Love thing.
I mean, that 4 year old girl knows she loves her room. She just doesn't know how to tell you.
That mother knows she loves her baby. But just doesn't how to explain it.
Those two indviduals know they had a connection there. But just don't know how to summarize it.
And those 80 year old couples know they're still in love. But just don't know how to sum up ALLLL those 60 years in this little box labeled Love.
Love is all about knowing, not explaining. And there are definately not any WHY's in there. Because you just know, but just can't tell.
That's why I like to believe that Love is a Universe on its own. One can never tell or explain ALL thats in it. Not even philosophy, religon, OR science.

I would say that Religion, plays a big part of what emotions we all have, because if the Almighty God, had not given us Emotions within us then, we would be like Robots, and would not have any feelings within us. so, religion might try to explain about Love, because it is written in the Scriptures. So, Science does not have any Part in what we feel. I do think that sometimes Science, might have the knowledge to tell us what are the emotions that we are having are, but aside from that they are not God. Good Morning to you too, Enki.

I'm not one who separates Philosophy from either Science or Religion. I do not think of love as a matter of hormones or physiology, and what I know of religion so often excludes love as actually practising it (which it is basically meant to do), that I'd have to agree that neither explains it. But I hate referring to love as "it". Love to me is a verb, not a noun. It is part of the way we're designed and the purpose for which we're designed, so both Science and Religion offer clues. So while I have no real explanation I'll go religiously on exploring the knowledge of that which is the basis of my Faith.

I really agree with ordinary...'s answer.:-) . Love cannot be expressed in words alone. It not only brings joy but can also help us through lonely times. The sun shines, the moon beams and the stars twinkle. It kind of lights up our lives.
So, philosophy best explains what is love..:))
SCIENCE explains like this - Love sweetens saliva, kills the bad germs in the system, oxygenates the blood, purifies the whole organism. Love is the chief solvent of the several ills to which human individual is a heir. The medicinal value and therapeutic utility of Love, cannot be exaggerated.
Above all, Love is to be considered as the highest technique for spiritual realization.
Whereas RELIGION explain love as- God is Love. Love understands, knows, illuminates, conquers and makes life eternal. Love purifies and liberates. Love is to be known and experienced by love. Since God is Love, the way to Him, is through Love.Love of God is the soul of religion.
So, this is how Science and Religion explain love in different forms. So, love cannot be expressed in form of words. I would say that both SCIENCE and RELIGION explain what is LOVE in different words, but the MEANING is SAME...:))

i don't think science has anything at all to do with love, and neither does religion if you don't believe in any.
yea, science says your brain releases these hormone things that make you feel love, but don't you feel love for your brain to do that?
and religion is the best example of love, but only if you believe in it.
i guess between the two choices given, science explains love literally, and religion best explains love nonliterally (if you have belief in it).
many things explain love though, because love comes from a number of things.

None of the above. Explaining love is like sticking a pin in a butterfly, the better to study it.
So many excellent answers, I'm delighted to give so many thumbs up. sab's, Stargirl, Stars:), Zelda & more. Yet I think angel baby put it most succinctly. "Nature, even animals know how to love."
However, this is your question--I just like to give credit where credit is due.
We know how to love, we love. Philosophy may ponder it; science may pick away at it, religion may make an attempt to define it, but does any of this matter to us?

Science can dissect, dismantle, and analyze love. But ultimatley can only explain the component parts. There is no scientific explanation for the entirety of love.
Religion, I fear, has a bad habit of misusing and misunderstanding the power of love. It allows for simplistic explanations to further the religious cause. Since love is inside us all, the best explanations come from deeply within. I prefer a spiritual route, but without the attendant baggage of most religions.

For science love is a chemical. For religion love is mostly an obligation, except for fanatics who are probably juiced up on their own body chemicals.
I would have to say neither science nor religion can explain love, which is a deep feeling of affirmation and connectedness.

I can't decide on any of the three even philosophy!!!!!! I'd say the heart best explains love but it can't express it just through words but by action, emotions and experiences.

I think that both SCIENCE & RELIGION are both equally bad...RELIGION is the cause of most wars and SCIENCE is used to make the weapons to fight those wars. LOVE is found in MOTHER NATURE when SHE is of a GOOD NATURE.
