There are three ways to answer this quesion : philosophical , relegious and sceintific.
Many philosphies had treid to give an answer , including the materialistic philosphies which see that material and its control are the most important purpose , idealistic philosphies which suggests that the mind is an independent entiety which shoudn't be ignored.
Relegions also have tried answering the question by suggesting multiple myths where the purpose of life differ with the relegion .
Science provides its answer with the fact that all the living objects have evolved from one anscestor and that the survival is for the fittest hince the purpose is to pass our gene by making love with others and get sure that the society that our children will live in is stronger (economically , military , ecologically etc).

80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.
I've come to two conclusions recently:
1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.
First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.
Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.
So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.
To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

The word purpose requires intelligence and design therefore purpose of life requires God.
“Unless you assume a God, the question of life’s purpose is meaningless.” –Bertrand Russell (20th century mathematician, philosopher and Nobel Laureate)
If God exists, then our purpose would be to seek Him for by finding God, we also find purpose.
If we reject God, then our lives are truly purposeless, meaningless and worthless because things that have no purpose have no worth. At all costs, we must avoid thoughts such as that so we must invent activities that will keep us busy and focused on happy thoughts so we will not have time to think about our meaningless existence and on our death.

It just is. The human conceit of purpose is an infantile reaching for significance.
Life is a lot more fun when you see without blinders and prescription aids. The the glasses off your mind. It can see better without them.

Objectively, the purpose of life, in general, is the creaton of new life.
Subjectively, the purpose of my life is to do the best I can and help other people and creatures to live better lives.

To keep your head when all around are losing theirs
and blaming it on you.
To trust yourself when all men doubt you
(but make allowance for their doubting, too)
To wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,
And yet -- don't look too good or talk too wise.
To dream and not make dreams your master;
To think and not make thoughts your aim;
To meet with triumph and disaster
and treat those two imposters just the same.
To bear to hear the truth you've spoken
twisted by idiots to make a trap for fools
Or to watch the things you gave your life to broken,
and stoop and build 'em up with worn out tools
To make one heap of all your winnings
and risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss --
And lose -- and start again at your beginnings,
and never breathe a word about your loss.
To talk with crowds and keep your virtue
Or walk with kings nor lose the common touch
So that neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you
And all men count with you but none too much
To fill the unforgiving minute
with 60 seconds worth of distance run.
Once you've done all that...
Yours is the world and everything that's in it
And, what's more, you'll be a man, my son.
