I recently had a medical emergency and had to leave my job i the middle of a shift. I was unable to contact another manager after making several attempts and leaving several messages. My workplace has no emergency protocol for such situations. While I was gone over $1000 was stolen. Can I be prosecuted for this theft?

You will not be arrested for theft unless the police have reasonable grounds to believe that you stole the money, or acted as an accomplice for whomever did.

You did not "abandon" your employment. You left the workplace without authorization. Abandoning employment is when you don't show up for several days. The employer is entitled to assume that you abandoned your position, subject to you being given an opportunity to refute the assumption.

The employee might discipline you for failure to safeguard its property, and that discipline might include dismissal. That's another story, and not what you asked.

You cannot be charged for theft of the USD1,000.00 since you were out of the workplace for a medical emergency.

Yes , if it was your responsibility and though your negligence, it was stolen or you took it and tried to cover it up with your story !
