Science contradicts the ancient vision of man as a being belonging to a race created by God, with a place apart in the Creation. To science we are just descended from bacteria and, more directly, apes. Many of our genes are common to animals such as the rat or even the fly.
Consider these
We travel in a vast sphere, always drifting in the uncertain, pulled from one side to another. Whenever we find a fixed point to attach and to fasten ourselves, it shifts and leaves us; and if we follow it, it eludes our grasp, slips past us, and vanishes for ever. Nothing stays for us. This is our natural condition, most contrary to our inclination; we burn with desires to find solid ground and an ultimate and solid foundation for building a tower reaching to the Infinite. But always these bases crack, and the earth obstinately opens up into abysses.
Blaise Pascal, 1623-1662, French philosopher, physic and mathematician, Thoughts

Scientific revelations have caused, and are causing widespread rejection. Creationists refuse to accept the scientific view of life, namely Darwinism. Science contradicts religion. With science, man is no more at the centre of creation and the earth is no more at the centre of the Universe and God’s purposes. Science reveals that man could not exist, that he is a product of a blind logic. This is a rather troublesome perspective and much inferior to our dreams.
It is... idle to pretend, as many do, that there is no contradiction between religion and science. Science contradicts religion as surely as Judaism contradicts Islam - they are absolutely and irresolvably conflicting views.

Firstly, we are the only species able to overcome our instincts.
Secondly we are the only species to have attained such a high tool using capability.
Thirdly we are unique in that we have large scale conflict, though this can be called a result of our self awareness and the evolution of ideological thought.
Fourthly we have not only language, but the capability to use multiple languages.
We are also the only species to have developed a taste for art. No other species on the planet has, to our knowledge, produced an intentionally artistic piece of work. Humanity can be very frivolous, something not found too often in nature.
From monotheistic religions point of view, our uniqueness can generally be traced back to the thought that God made us that way, and as a lot of religions say Gods thoughts and reasoning couldn't be comprehended by us mere mortals, that line of thought comes to a dead end. We're special cos we were made special.
Hope that helped some.

From a scientific point of view there are two main areas.
Firstly we are the only organism, as far as we know, to have language. Other animals can communicate, sometimes in very complex ways but they do not have language which involves grammar.
Secondly we are the only animal that consistently manufacture and use tools. Some other animals such as certain types of crow and populations of chimpanzees do, but not consistently.

We are capable of metacognition- thinking about how we think. At least most of us are.
