First let me state some facts as I knew them when I was in federal service.I was a union steward for the IBEW.We didn't have the right to strike,even if thing were going south for us in negations.A arbitrator was brought in if we reach that point.If we did walk off the job then the same thing could happen to us as what happen to the air controllers under Regan's presidency..They were fired and in the short run put the americans safety at rick.Second, the pay scale at least for a WG grade worker is determine by the government doing a survey every few year on government and private pay and coming up with an average for the government employees.As a electrician for the government on Panama canal and in Colorado I was making close to what the public electrician made and don't you believe that you don't earn your keep working for the government.Especially in Panama.It takes a lot of maintenance to keep that canal running.I can't speak for state worker,because there are different rules you work under.I do know some state employees in the prison system work under conditions where the inmate have is better off then the employee.I also worked 5 1/2 years in the prison system as a maintenance electrician and had it better then the CO's (Correction officer) Maybe you think I've worked for the government all my life and have a bias. Not so.I spent 30 years in Industrie working in chemical and oil plants.So what I'm trying to say is cut the public worker some slack,because without them the private sector would be hurting without their service.
