Assuming you've read a lot of short stories in school or on your own, who do you think is the best short story writer you've ever read? I say Ernest Hemingway because everytime I read his short stories I discover something new, and I've read some ten times.

I would have to say Fritz Leiber. Or maybe (alternately) Cornell Woolrich. Oh yeah, and then there's Roald Dahl and John Collier. Hm...guess I can't pick just one.

Raymond Carver. My personal fav and who inspired me to start writing. He wrote during the 70's and 80's and only wrote short stories (plus some poetry) in a minimalistic style similar to Hemingway but even more essential. They're all fictional realism about working class people. I highly recommend him. He pretty much reignited interest in short stories during the 80's with his use of minimalism (although I think I heard somewhere that he hated using the word minimalism to describe his work). Other favs: Richard Yates, Borges, Calvino, Oates, Kafka. Hmmm...they're so many I love. I guess it depends on what you like. Hope this helps.

Probably Christopher Pike, considered by many the best American writer of all time. Unfortunately most of hios atories are childrens stories so probably not so well known in the adult field.

I am, they hold deep personal meanings for me, in the daylight of day simmering down into darkness, the snap of twigs underfoot as they try to escape, the coldness of life as the soul departs, life in its multitudes of color blending opposites in beautiful ways, so many stories untold barely beginning and never having an end.

Arthur Conan Doyle, not just his Sherlock Holmes stories, but his horror stories are marvelous as well.
