I use Windows XP and Realtek Network Adapter(on board). Whenever I try to set up a network using network setup wizard, it shows an error."unable to complete the wizard" try to setup network manually etc.. the network setup wizard log shows these
Network Setup Wizard Log
Attempting to set computer name
Old computer name is the same as new computer name - not setting.
Setting server description (comment): desk
Attempting to set workgroup name
Workgroup name is the same as the old one - not setting.
The Sharing configuration is unavailable.
Adapter Configuration for Home Networking failed.
Shared Printer: CutePDF Writer
Shared Printer: Canon MP160 Printer

I am able to successfully browse other computers and ping other computers on the network, but they cannot ping or browse files on this computer. I don't have any firewalls installed and the computers are in same workgroup and same ip series. I tried reinstalling the network card drivers too...
Please help.. thanks in advance...

Microsoft OneCare firewalls on Vista block peers by default.

XP File and Print sharing need a free upgrade to work with Vista.

In looking at your log, it shows that Sharing configuration is unavailable, that probably means it is not enabled!

Try going to control panel, network connections, click on the "Local Area Connection", and in the list that appears be sure "File and Printer sharing" is enabled. If not enable or install the protocol. Without it you won't be able to see the computer from any other machines in the workgroup even if you have shared a drive or folder!.

Check that your firewall has the exceptions for file and printer sharing set. If you have non-windows firewall, try turning it off, the network wizard often can not handle this. Then manually right click any folders or printers you wish to share ans set this. If the 2 printers you show are not attached directly to this machine, they should not be set shared.

Go to "my computer", right click on it, go to properties, go to the computer name tab and try changing the computer name and the workgroup and see if that helps. If you're using more than one connection, make sure that you select the realtek network adapter when you are going through the set up. If you're using a wireless adapter, make sure you select the "ignore" check box.

go to the My computer Icon on the desk top

Right click - properties - Computer Name tab

Make sure the workgroup name is WORKGROUP on all computers on the network, but each computer to have a different name.

Then you have to set up the sharing on each hard drive in each computer. They dont have to be the same, you vcan have one computer see all hard drives, and the others cannot see any, for example

right click the hard drive in My computer, select sharing

If it's a new laptop then it will have it's own adapter built-in. Look around in the control panel for a connections icon or something (sorry I don't have vista) and then search for networks and then click connect. Sorry for the vague advise!
