In my opinion they're tighter than the Dutch

The reason Australians have a reputation for being "tight" in the USA and in some parts of Europe is that we have no tipping culture. People get paid a fair wage for a day's work here and do not need supplements from clients. You don't even tip taxi drivers in Australia - you would get shot in New York or London if you forgot to tip the driver.

It is usual to round up a restaurant bill to a convenient number but there is no 10% or 15% requirement. If you want to pay the bill as it is and not leave a tip, you are perfectly entitled to do so. You never tip bar staff, they don't expect it.

As we don't have a tipping culture, we are not used to the constant hands out from everyone we see in the USA so we tend to ignore them.

That depends if they're travelling over here or living over here.

If there' over here for only a short period of time, then you've got to remember that it's very expensive over here. So while they're being "Tight" they have actually spent more than they normally would.

Australian, like other nationalities, tend to relax a bit more if they are actually living over here.

In Australia itself it's a different matter; they tend to be very generous and welcoming.

In my experience aussies are relaxed, laid-back, friendly, open, full of fun and open-minded. A generalisation, I know, but that's how I have found them.

Pretty great place and people.

Us Aussies are awesome.

And if they are Aussie backpackers in England they are tight because they are backpackers (get it?).
