which title ( chairman, ceo, president, etc..) would be considered top in a company, and would answer to noone else?

Depending on the organization's structure, usually the Chairman -- but the chairman still answers to the Board, and to the shareholders. It's really bad corporate governance for someone in a key leadership role to answer to no one. The firm would take a hit from their external auditors if there was no accountability from the senior person.

The chairman since he can fire the CEO. But for day to day operations it is the CEO.
