I'm getting an endo-vaginal (and pelvic for that matter) ultrasound to get my ovaries checked out. I've had one pelvic exam in the past, and it was done by my doctor, who's female. My question is, is it uncomfortable with male doctors? I didn't get a chance to ask if I could have a woman when I made my appointment, and I just want to make sure that I won't end up feeling really uncomfortable.

Just wanted to say thanks so far for the answers. =] I didn't think about the fact that they see all sorts of women, which is kinda silly of me.

I can't vote apparently because i'm only a level one answerer, but all the answers have helped anyway. =]

Most ultrasound techs are women, just so you know.

I've been to both male and female ob/gyns. There is a favorite of mine who happens to be male. He was my hero when I miscarried back in '98.

As long as they are professional, male ob/gyns are just as good as female. :)
As I said before, though, most of the techs are women, they are ultrasound technicians, not ob/gyns. Naturally you can make sure to request a woman. :)

Trust me. Male OB/GYN's have spent their entire careers with those parts of the female anatomy, and to them you are more like a scientific specimen than anything else. If you are having an ultrasound, though, it might be done by a technician rather than a doctor.

In any case, when a male is doing a pelvic exam, HE usually finds it more comfortable to have a female nurse in the room. If you are uncomfortable and there is no female there, ask to have a nurse present. And go ahead and tell them you are uncomfortable or embarrassed or whatever. If you do, they will probably be more careful to explain what they are doing and make you feel more a ease.

Some women are uncomfortable with male doctors, if you feel uncomfortable with the idea of being examined by a male doctor please call to see if a woman doctor is available to do your exam. A woman will be in the room when the doctor does your exam, that should make you a little more comfortable though.

I know this sounds very sexist, but I am going to say it anyway because it is my opinion. :oD

I actually prefer male doctors. I have a long list of medical problems, and I always seem to get much better treatment from the males than the females. Male doctors are quick to diagnose my problem almost every single time. Whereas females never seem to understand a thing.

I wasted years seeing a female doctor who couldn't figure out that I was suffering from an ovarian disease. She ran all kinds of tests and prolonged my suffering for literally years. I moved out of the area and ended up with a male gyno who immediately diagnosed my problem.

My point?

Give a male doc a try.

Your physician will be very qualified to do the ultrasound and to make sure you're as comfortable as possible during the process.

If you simply do not want a male doctor doing this procedure, call and reschedule your appointment, and ask for a female doctor.

My feeling is that you'll do just fine with the male doctor, but it's your call.

They have lived through gross anatomy (a human disection) and hundreds of other womens hairy legs and baby deliveries, just like women doctors.

I'm actually more comfortable with them because everytime I have gone to a female ob/gyn to be tested for an STD I got the guilt shame lecture (like I didn't feel bad enough) - and I never got them from a male.

You gotta think of it like this....from a medical standpoint, a doctor taking a look at "those" pink parts, really isn't all that different to a doctor than taking a look at your others....
