The cricket bat was invented by Johnny Goodfellow, an Australian aborigine who lived near Garah in Northern NSW. In the early 1400's tribes of aborigines would gather near Sydney at a neutral spot called (in the native tongue) Sydney Cricket Ground. Here they would settle inter tribal disputes by throwing spherical leather objects at each other. Johnny Goodfellow grew tired of being hit in the head with the leather spherical objects and carved a piece of wood in the rough shape of a woomera. He added a handle because some of the leather object throwers sometimes were a bit wayward and he needed a long reach to belt them out of the way. He especially needed this object when playing against the local women, as they had a ferocious lady bowler called Lillian Thompson who could throw very very quickly. The carved wooden stick grew popular with all tribes who soon made their own versions. Thus the cricket bat grew in popularity and was adopted by other countries when Australia taught them how to play the game (which came to be known as cricket). Unfortunately, no other country could become quite as adept at using the bat as Australians.

Before the 18th century bats tended to be shaped similarly to how hockey sticks are currently shaped. The bat is traditionally made from willow wood, specifically from the Cricket-bat Willow , treated with linseed oil. There is no one such inventor but two companies namely Puma and Gray- Nicolls jointly manufactured the cricket bat which is used now in cricket.
