There is no card slot on her laptop, and she bought an external one, but still it didnt work - but it works on my PC. And obviously the software was loaded prior to trying all these things.

Gotta love that Vista.

You will have to set up the hardware for your computer to notice it. Or, just go to my computer and search for the hardware.Or steer away from Vista. It really is made for the more advanced computer user.

That all depends on the type of digital camera she has. If its less than 2 years, you might be lucky to get the latest driver from the relevant site. If its more than 2 years, its a bit harder, but not impossible. All you have to do is, go to the manufacturer website, look for the specific camera model, and download the necessary driver. Otherwise, you can use a software called, DRIVER GENIUS from AVANQUEST. This french software worked wonders on my laptop with Vista installed. You should give it a try too. For me, Vista was prematurely released to the market for the beginners and intermediate users. They should have waited some times to sort out all the incompatibilities issues that we the current users of 'old' operating systems find it difficult to adapt in terms of unnecessary hardware and gadgets upgrade.

Go to the website of her camera and look for an updated driver compatible with Vista. Vista has compatibility problems. Most of your peripheral devices will not work. Has she tried to use her printer? Might as well search for your printer driver while you are at it.

Does the laptop have a memory card slot? If so just put the camera's card directly into the computer

The camera probably is not compatible with Vista.

Your neighbor will have to go to the camera manufacturers web site to see if Vista drivers are available for that camera.
