Well, if you want to know how fast it is and compare it then you can start by looking at horsepower.
The 2008 BMW M3 will have 414 hp
The new corvette z06's have 505 hp
The mustang GT's have 300 hp (and they are heavier which makes them even slower)
I know the z06 will do every bit of 198 mph. The BMW will probably top out right around 175-180.
Also, the z06 corvette will have a lot more power in the lower gears while the M3 will do better in the higher gears. This means the z06 will take off a lot faster than the M3. I know you can take off in 5th gear in the z06 and get all the way to 160 mph without switching gears. There is no way you could do that in the BMW.
If you really want to have fun in either of those cars and really learn how to drive them to their full potential then I would suggest doing a track day at a nearby race track. They are usually held at tracks where they have professional motorcycle racing and formula one racing, which means you can have your car at up to 170 mph on straight aways and taking turns at 80 mph. These aren't the typical oval tracks. You have instructors in your car assisting you and basically teaching you how to race. If you are wanting a high performance car the least you can do is actually use it. I don't call doing burnouts and driving 100 mph down the interstate using your car.

Really Compair the other answers and then compair the year and model M3 that your looking to buy with the Top Speed of a Corvette ZO6 in the same year that cruises at 180+MPH. Now I'm not saying that the M3 is slow,,, the Mustang would loose in a 0-Top speed run if the 3 cars were to go head to head lined up. But who's the fastest?
Buy the M3 you will like the power and handling too.

Realistically, buying a first car because it is fast usually ends in tears.
The odds are very high that you will damage your car in the first couple of years. The odds are a combination of inexperience and immaturity will lead to some kind of accident. The faster you are going, the more likely the accident is to be serious.
A BMW M3 is a serious car for experienced drivers. The 2008 model has over 400 horse power. The older ones have less.
If you really must get a BMW as a first car, get a low powered 3 series and learn to drive it. After a couple of years cultivating a relationship with your insurance company, trade it in for something a little faster.

No other car can touch the BMW M3. Why? Because every car that can keep up with the M3 is massed produced on a huge scale. (mustangs, corvettes etc etc) BMW M3's engine are hand crafted. They are built with so much care and detail its insane. M3's or one of a kind, im lucky enough to own one as well.

Scion, BMW M-3, Mustang, Mitsubushi Lancer EVO. Subaru WRX STI. Or any other car with performance or high amounts of wrecks (scion) will be impossable for you to Insure. Insurance of $3,000 a year sound good? GO on kid dream high buy a high performance car as your first car and we will bury you in the wreckage. I suggest The drivers edge car control courses and some track time at speed before you think your are ready for the meat grinder that chews up over 7,000 young drivers a year.

Straight line performance is not 100 % the M3's specialty , but will run circles around most other sports cars , (not z06 though) . Not , a good first car either.

I see more BMW Z's and M's wrecked than any other car. They either go really fast or the people who drive them can't very well.
