Most of your riding, and push mowers are 4 stroke. Usually they use a " splash and dip" system, which works by when the connectingrod and piston move down, they collect oil and push it up, like a car engine but without an oil pump. 2 stroke engines are usually found on weedeaters, chainsaws, leaf blowers, etc. Those require mixing the oil and gas, and sometimes their are seperate containers for both and they will mix themselves. The black dust you see is from carbon build up from the valves and piston. Nothing to worry about.

most likely it is a 2 stroke gasoline engine, so the oil to lubricate the engine is mixed in with the fuel. Naturally, this means the oil will get burned off, and thats probably what you see out of the muffler.
