My dad still works at a minimum wage job, but gets excellent benefits and social security. I do have a job myself but I find it hard to support me, my wife and children along with my parents. My dad is 75 and he says that he might not have enough money to live if he retires. I always insisted that he retire and I can help him out. As a child, you always want to return something to your parents. He claims that he wants to retire and does not work anymore. He feel that we would not have enough to survive. I feel kind of guilty that he is still working at 75 years old. Please help me cope with this feeling. Do you know anyone that works at 75 yrs old?

Yes, a few. There is a program for people over 55 working in the public sector 20 hours a week min wage. It is under title one grant. More power to him.

Your father probably remembers some of the Depression as a child and I've not seen anyone who went through that that doesn't have a fear of "not having enough money". When my grandmother was in her 80s and 90s, she worried about not having enough money to live on and she took in $3000 a month !!! She was born in 1904 so she well remembered the hard times she and the kids had since the father wouldn't work half the time.

You might want to consider talking with him about going to a financial planner and have them sit down with the two of you and work out a plan so he understands more about his money. Maybe once he sees it on paper, he will know he can relax and enjoy a few years at home. But then, if he is able to work at that age and enjoys it, why not?

My mother worked with a woman who survived the Holocaust and she was in her 80s and continued to work because she never wanted to "not" have money if she needed. She only worked parttime but she seemed very happy and everyone loved having her with them. Another woman was in her 70s and worked parttime just to supplement her income but she also lived through the Depression. Both lived into their 90s so maybe staying busy is better than just sitting around the house and listening to the arteries harden :)

Don't feel guilty if your dad is happy doing what he likes. Not many can get around and take care of themselves at that age but I would definitely do the fin. planner just so he can see what he has and have some peace-of-mind with his finances.

nope.

but if he remains active the better his life will be. Suggest that he moves to part time, for a year or two. Then you'll have to cut back the budget. stop buying luxuries (cable or satellite tv is a luxury), downgrade cars if you need to, have only one car if your wife doesn't work, can she drive you to work three days a week to have the car for errands and hauling your kids?

Your dad Might have 10 years left of his life. He's pretty much reached the life expectancy for American men, so buck up and let him relax a little and be a good son.

My Mother is 76, she works 2 days a week. It keeps her involved in the community and helps pay the bills. She would love to be still working at 80. Don't beat yourself up about not being able to help your Dad out. Life is not perfect and I'm sure that visiting your Dad everynow and then and hopefully your children too is all he expects. :-)

I know people that is still working at that age - I work with one myself. If he choses to work, that is his decision and you should not feel bad that he is working but instead should be greatful that he is healthy enough at that age to continue working.
