Coyotes?....?

Question

Can you mistake a coyote howl for a distant whistle? I live out in the middle of nowhere....I have never heard a coyote howl, but that is the only logical explination for the whistling sound I heard while taking my dog potty... and he would not be able to protect me...poor guys sooo little! Anywho...someone tell me it wasn't a coyote...I'm just hearing things....right?

I haven't seen it. And we are way out in the middle of the country...I think I am just scaring myself b/c I am home alone....lol, I am good at that!

Ok, after listening to the sound clips....I guess I have heard one before...and thats not what I heard tonight. Its so creepy out here....Grr....It really sounded like someone was standing by my machine shed by the field whistling at me...just a long, "hey, I'm over here" whistle...not like....ow ow! whistle....

A coyote sounds like a high pitched howl. It's not a long "awooooo" like you would think a wolf would do, but it's pretty recognizable. I don't think I would confuse a whistle for a coyote howling.

Coyotes are very widespread where I live. They are very common in wild areas and suburbs across the US, so it would not be surprising that it was indeed a coyote you heard. Calm down..coyotes are no threat to you at all. They will try and avoid human contact whenever possible. However, they can be a threat to small dogs. Never leave your small dog unattended outdoors if you live in coyote country (especially at night). They will not mess with large dogs, but will hunt small dogs and cats.

I live in the middle of nowhere, too ... I mean, really, I do! And I've heard plenty of sounds I don't recognize. People tell me there are coyotes here, and bear, and ... all sorts of critters. I don't doubt it, but I've never seen either. I see deer all the time, and I've seen foxes.

If you're staying close to your house, I doubt that you're in any danger. Wild animals tend to avoid rather than attack. But, is there somethin' out there? Ohhhh... I think so!

Coyotes have a high pitched yelp..if it's a whistle it's possible it may be another animal..possibly a rodent type..ground squirell, chipmunk or other.
Coyotes don't attack people unless they are threatened...they tend to run away.

I dont want to scare you...but I have to. We have coyotes in my neighborhood and they will kill dogs but mainly boys. I dont know if yours is a boy or girl but...yeah. The coyotes killed 2 dogs in my neighborhood and now I make sure my dog is safe inside every night even though shes a girl. The coyotes killed a great dane and a labrador. My dogs a lab so I freaked. What they do to guy dogs is have a female lure the them out as the rest hide. Then they pounce on the dog and goodbye mans best friend. I bet it was a coyote. I live in town and I still have coyotes.

Might have been a night bird, you didn't say what state you live in, so I can't say which would be in your area.

Coyotes don't go running over and attacking people, but they will try and grab small dogs and cats for food. You don't need to be afraid but you do need to protect your small dog.

City Coyote are quiet and look like sick little dogs.
