I asked some girls why they desperately need to be sticks and they said it was "for the guys" but don't most guys like girls with a little meat?
Is this whole concept of copying the messed up pop icons of today just a little off? So many girls insult the "pop princesses" but all strive to be stick thin like them. Why?

I really don't like it when a woman is purposely thin like that. When you can tell they have starved themselves for the sake of vanity and to look like some emaciated model they have seen on Vogue or Elle. It is a very dangerous compulsion. I work with a lot of young girls who have to look a certain way and maintain a certain weight because they go on stage in costumes and have to look healthy etc.. I see it allot where girls put on weight and struggle to take it off again but it is worse to see someone going the other way and wasting away. I have had one case of a girl who was sick in the head, she weighed something like 110 and still thought she was fat and was working out after her shows and only eating water melon - the usual denial stuff so we had to send her to a doctor. It was really hard as a man to have to try and talk her out of what she was doing to herself.
I think the culture of today puts far to much emphasis on image especially on young women. I understand that they want to look nice and impress the guys they are interested in and I am sure most men appreciate a woman who takes care of her body to look toned and fit but when it becomes the major focus point of their lives and they get obsessed with it then I think it is unhealthy.
The "Pop princesses" you mentioned are role models and should set a better example to young women.

Hey.. Even though I'm a girl, I understand what your saying. I have so many friends who have the perfect body & yet they say that they're too fat & they want to get in shape more & go on a diet. It drives me crazy how these girls are thinking that their "fat" or not perfect. I believe the reason for this is because of the damn models & celebrities, etc. . . Have you ever seen the models these days? Their bones are practically popping out of their skin. NASTY... Every year, it seems like the average 'weight' that girls should be is getting smaller in sizes.. :x All I can say is that I'm really worried & I hope those girls out there can wake up & see what their doing to themselves.

Apparently, the U.S. is the most overweight nation. However, it also seems to have the most problems with anorexics and such. My mom's boyfriend is from Puerto Rico originally (then New York and now where I live in the south). He says that he has never seen the beat. He doesn't understand why women who are already thin want to be thinner...I don't understand it either.

There isn't one set rule for beauty. My aunt who is 5'8" and very thin is absolutely gorgeous. My mom who is 5'4" and what most would consider overweight (I consider her curvy) is absolutely gorgeous. Women need to learn to be happy with the bodies they have....but, we live in a messed up world.

Because that is how the entertainment business and California are portrayed!! They make young people think that thin is pretty. When really thin is sick. I love my curves. Most guys like a curvy woman not a stick figure!!

You're just like my lady. She's not "stick" thin, but she's thin and she's been trying to gain weight for the longest.

I sure don't! I couldn't even if I tried. And anyway, I just ate an extreme chocolate blizzard. What on earth do stick girls do when they're depressed????

Most girls are not only like sticks but also anorexic because they blindly and stupidly copy the fashion models.

desiring to be and getting oneself stick thin could also be her way of having control over herself (like when she doesnt feel like she has any power or say in her life), or in extreme cases is a form of self-abuse/injury

It is really to feel superior over other girls.
Men do things to impress women.
Women do things to impress or make enemies of other women.
It is never about the guys!
