Authors always talk in terms of words - not pages. A short story can be as little as two words. They have two word short story contests. There are also 100 word story contests and 500 story contests. Once you get over about 15,000 words, you hit the novella range. Anthologies and magazines don't generally want stories over 10,000 words.

Careful or you may wind up in my next novel.

A short story is generally between about five pages and fifty pages. Anything shorter than five pages is called a "short-short" or "flash fiction" and anything longer than about fifty is a novella or a novel. You don't often see forty or fifty page short stories though. If there is that much information, the author will usually go ahead and take it into novella/novel.

What everyone says about word count is true, and is a better way to think about length because of the way fonts and formatting can change word count. As a general rule, think that if you're typing on Microsoft Office or Word Perfect in Times New Roman 12 font, there are approximately 300 words per page.

The short stories I wrote barely reach two pages, but maybe because Im only 12. For people, normal short stories are probably fifty pages or less.

According to wikipedia, a shortstory is between 2 and 10,000 words. Some argue that it extends to 40,000 and there novella range starts. Novels are considered, in this school, to be 100,000+. But in terms of pages, a good shortstory should be about 5-10 max. You don't want to put too many ideas in to shortstories, that's the key.

A writing teacher I had in middle school--eons ago--once said that a short story should be as long as a woman's skirt: long enough to cover the subject, but short enough to be interesting.
