can i just stuff an un used dish sponge inside for a secondary filter?

You could, but probably shouldn't. A dish sponge is not going to allow a whole lot of water flow... You might consider cutting out some pieces of pantyhose and putting BioBalls in them. The BioBalls will provide biological filtration, while the pantyhose provides mechanical filtration (removes large debris from the tank). Of course, you could always just go buy commercially made filter cartridges...

they make a spong specific for power heads. they create a surface for bio filtration as well as mechanical filtration
