First you should be asking is the tree really there. Am I really here. Is sound just a figment of my own tortured world. Am I typing to an existence that is real or in my mind.
If everything is real and not just your mind creating it than...of course the tree makes a sound.
If everything is created by your mind than... That tree could turn into a butterfly as it falls.
Or it could make a sound ...It is up to you:)

No it creates a shock wave.
If a tree falls in a forest and there is a human near by does it make a sound.
No it creates a shock wave that strikes the ear drum. The inner ear translates that vibration in to a nerve impulse that the brain interprets as sound.

That's a Zen question. There is no tree and no forest, so how could there be a sound? It means that phenomena have no true essence, so they don't really "exist" as permanent, individual, things. At least that's my understanding of the question. I'm a Buddhist, but not a Zen Buddhist.

A scientist proposed this question but in a different form:

If there is a cat in the box and you don't know it's a cat and you have no way of interacting with the cat, and you put poison that must be devoured to die otherwise it is useless (50% chance) how do you tell if the cat is dead or alive? There is no way of telling. There are two possible realities but once you open the box and find out one of them collaspes

Sound is a wave going through the air. If the sound is loud enough it can do physical damage to the plants around the core maker of the sound. The damage can be examined at a later time.

A sound of a certain frequency and strength can break glass.

Well let me tell you that Bob can't have a Perception that Joe indeed does exist if he does not have a true reality of that concept, and if he thinks that he does it is nothing more than meaning less thoughts that are unfounded, get it dude~ All right then, next question.

If there is oxygen in the atmosphere, there will be a sound when a tree falls.

i am sure it did and you would find the tape recorder smashed because the tree landed on it and all the animals gathered around to mourn the loss of their home.
