Congratulations, you have just fallen victim to a scam. First of all, ask yourself why the Australian lottery would be using a bank in the UK. Second, I will bet that the e-mail address that the documents were sent to a yahoo or hotmail e-mail address. All major banks have their own e-mail server and domain and would never use a free and non-secure e-mail account.
How close am I so far? I get between five and ten of this type of scam e-mail in an average week. Here is a more or less typical one that I got today (Ho - hum. Only a million pounds? Hardly worth claiming, eh? Note that the contact is a Yahoo e-mail address and not a bank or government agency e-mail server address):

Good one. Put a stop on that check. It's a scam!! Have you EVER entered a lottery from Australia? You do know that Nigeria and Australia are not that close. Did you call the bank in Nigeria? Did you call the Internation Lottery commision to verify that you have won? This is how identity theft starts. Think about it, If you won a BIG international lottery- do you think they would sent you a B.S. e-mail? Do you REALLY think they would want to cantact you becuase they want to get rid of THEIR money? No smart! I would keep a close eye on your personal info.
