how do u clean a 55 gallon filter? im using a toothbrush and brushing the wierd brownish stuff off but it just seems to be not working. its like a never ending of the brown stuff.

You really don't want to brush that "brown stuff" off. That is nitrogen fixing bacteria that will break down ammonia and nitrite into less toxic compounds. When cleaning your filter (once every 1-2 months), just insert new media, there is no reason (it is really one of the last things you want to do) clean the entire filter.

I use q-tips and pipe cleaners along with hot water to clean my filter. Soak it in hot water for a few minutes so the algae loosens so it's easier to clean.

super hot tap water ( again ) and anything that will get the gunk out.

remember this experience and try to keep it clean.
