There will be an awkward silence and when it happens all you do is laugh it off and say, "Don't you just hate it when you can't think of anything to say?" You'll both be nervous and trying to impress each other, which will bring on the awkward silence. Try being yourself and just talk to him as if he was already a friend. Relax and take it slow.

Awkward silence is not as bad as it may seem.
Try answering the phone and acting as if this is a new friend that you are wanting to get to know better.
After all, he may look good, but is he really that great? What does he like to do, where is he headed in life?
Does he have a job, go to school or have a family near to him?
There are always questions, but you must inspect what you 'want' him for in your life. Is he a piece of meat to be used and abused or a person with feelings and experiences to share.
Be a friend, be aloof but not distant. Ask him why he is calling.
Challenge him to show his value.
Taunt him with your interest, flirt with him to get his interest.
Be a friend first, then if you feel he is worth going on with, you know that you made a sensible choice of who to pursue.
Relax, he is human.
Take a breath and clear your mind.
Wait another ring, then answer like it was an old friend calling, glad to be alive.
Then keep him talking so you don't have too.
Peace!

Just be yourself and talk about whatever comes up. He's just a person. Also, sometimes, there are certain people that you just won't be compatible with when it comes to conversation. I'm a talkative guy, yet there are a few people I know that I just can't really talk to without there being an awkward silence.
If this guy is a good fit for you, then the conversation will happen naturally if you just try to relax. And it always helps to start with questions.

we often go through a lot of dilemmas like this especially its baffaling when it actually comes to matter connected to hearts. If you are friendly and frank with this person then go ahead girl just talk casually.Don't be overly conscious as it might ruin your chances of opening up with this person and you might end up giving him a false impression about yourself.
If it is the first time you are talking with this person over the phone or may be the very first time in your life then just start with your feilds of interest,if you find any similarities...whoa! then you will not run out of things to talk. But if your interests contradict then rather than finding resons to voice your counter thoughts just get a chance to know something new about the person.Soon you will develop interest in eachother.
Start with casual talks ,just don't let your inhibitions get over you.Let me repeat don't be overconcious and be overly impressive and try to show something you aren't.Try to be naturally relaxed and even the simplest talk will be interesting and memorable. If you incase pause and run out of things to talk just talk about whatever is infront of you.....it could be anything ,like a bottle of water....or a laptop..or your dog..
But don't sound lame and kiddish.Thats it girl.have a nice time.Hope it helps!

Guys don't like to talk on the phone, so he probably wants to say what he has to say and get it over with.
Concentrate on making him feel comfortable. He's probably nervous.
Think of him as a friend, and smile as you're talking to him.

Just ask him a lot of open-ended questions about himself, and let HIM do most of the talking. He'll like that anyway, if he's a typical guy.

ask him the types of activities he likes to do, maybe you'll find that you have something in common. or you can talk about books, movies, or in a moment of desperation, the weather!
