It really all depends on how somebody receives the comment; if they know they're smart, calling them stupid probably won't do much, but if somebody is really sensitive about their intelligence quotient, they'll get more self conscious about it. That's why skinny people with self confidence laugh at you if you call them fat, and Michael Moore would go home and cry in his cookie dough. Also think how Forrest Gump would get upset when he'd be called stupid - because he knew he wasn't smart :-)
