There weren't many cars around in 1906, and both fuel and roads were major problems.
Most people would have taken the railroad to texas, then overland stage from the railroad depot to a nearby town, then bought a horse to finish the journey.
Some would have taken a ship to Texas rather than the railroad. Railroads were cheaper, but they were unpleasant. They could take a ship to Galveston, then proceeded by stage and horse to their final destination.
