Much depends upon weather the car take a lot of long trips and you live in a very hot dry climate. They tend to last much longer under these conditions. Today, to be perfectly honest with you OEM mufflers (origional equipment manufactures) last ten years and longer. The quick change muffler places don't always use the best products avalable. Unless you have a warranty on your muffler and or pipes you and I are left holding the bag. 20 years ago I could not make any muffler or exhaust pipe system last any longer than 3 yrs.
Times have changed as more pipes and mufflers are stainless steel come on new cars today.

Sorry that's a hard one to answer. Different climatic conditions and different ice clearing methods cause different results. As well different driving habits also result in longevity differences.
So taking out the climatic condifitons for the moment, there are some basics that apply.
If the vehicle is not used a lot and most of its trips are short, then you might have a shorter life as moisture builds up in the muffler and does not dissipate as you do not let the exhaust system heat up enough and water sits there and rusts it out for a 1.5-3 year life.
If vehicle is used for longer commutes and used quite a bit then you may find a decent muffler will last 5-6 years or more.
Friends ford crown victoria had to have muffler replaced about every two years, short trips and car hardly got warmed up for most. My last 3 buggies have never replaced the muffler and unloaded vehicles after 5-6 years.

well i lived in a northern state, which mean snow and salt. It's lowered and has scraped plent of times yet mine is going on 11 years old, and it hasn't rusted through yet. My brothers car his went out at 12 years in the same climate. These are both oe mufflers. My car is an acura and his a mazda.
I would say i have a few years left before mine goes, lots of areas starting to rust. For a good oe muffler it should last a good 10 years for a cheap aftermarket one maybe 3-4 years.

I think it all depends on where you live and the climate... The muffler on my 1989 Chevy pickup lasted 15 years but the muffler on my uncles truck lasted less than 5 but he lives in Connecticut and I live in Florida... The road salt up there promotes rust much faster.

Depends on climate, quality of gasoline, and how well the engine is warmed up during a typical drive.
If 3 years isn't long enough, purchase a stainless steel muffler. Your last one was obviously an anodized unit.
