Why on earth did they tell you not to get one!?

I have one and I love him to bits!!!! I've had him for 2 weeks now. He's 3 months old. He's one of the most entertaining and awesome pets I've ever had! He's my FIRST reptile too.. not difficult to look after as long as you know what you're doing.
This is my daily routine with Calvin...
7 o'clock - light and heat switched on.
8 o'clock - place 4 crickets in the enclosure.
9 o'clock - mist enclosure (spray with spray bottle), fill up dripper if needs be.
10 o'clock - give 2 more crickets.
12 o'clock - mist entire cage again.
If I see no crickets in there I put more in. At this stage he should eat how ever much he can.
Lights out at about 9pm.

They are fascinating pets. Everyone who visits are intruiged by him. It is amazing to watch him move and feed.
It sounds quite complicated but that's just my routine. He really doesn't take much to look after. I don't believe I am doing anything wrong... so I'd like to know WHY people say no to them as a first reptile..................

Chameleons are not beginner pets- you need to do a lot of research and they cost a lot of money- my first lizard was a veiled cham, but I did a lot of research on owning one- ended up selling him to a breeder since he was more colorful and bigger than theirs :) The only thing was if you looked at him too long he would stop eating for a week or so.

You could try a smaller lizard- anoles, ground lizards, etc. Go to your pet store and look to see what they have- then go look up info. If you want one you can take out and play with- your options are bearded dragons and blue tonged skinks. If you want one to look at and not play with- almost any of the smaller lizards will work.

Bearded dragons are a good first lizard- calm natured, easy keepers, and pretty friendly if worked with.

Check out the care sheets and other info at reptile forums...they talk about a large variety of reptile species. See what kind you can afford to set up for and care for properly! Chameleons are nice, but a bit tricky for a first reptile pet.

beardies and water dragons are great starter reptiles but water dragons will need larger enclosures as they get older, it seems like you want somrthing more exotic than geckos or anoles so uromastyx are great and so are skinks.yeah and sorry but chameleons are def not a good starter reptile they can get sick easily if therir requirements aren't close to perfectly met. Good Luck!
