so I went away for a week, and my cousion needed the computer for a week and I clearly told her to use the other computer. We have two of them. She mistakenly used the one with the subscribed antivirus. Now I come home and she tells me there are some problems with the computer, like pop ups runs slower than normal and when I looked at it, these things do happen indeed. Also seems like third party sites claiming they can remove the viruses and what not advertisements appear. I know she visited some porn sites. I keep getting messages from the old norton antivirus that virus has been repaired (velara, downloader etc.) and some viruses cannnot be removed as norton says. I am going to the store tomorrow to get norton internet security 2008 because it is what I can get at a good price. I am in a personal need to fix this problem. I am also getting messages like advertisements which seem to say remote computer is tracking. and things are showing on the desktop acting like windows security an

YES. Updating your product will help because the newer versions come with antivirus, firewall, AND now with antispyware / anti-adware which is what it sounds like you are mostly infected with.

If your version of Norton already has al of those you could attempt to force an update and then perform a complete scan.

You will want to turn off system restore until things are cleaned and rebooted and then turn it back on to create a clean restore point.
You'll also want to make sure windows is automatically updating.

Once you've forced an update and/or installed the newer version and have forced all updates and rebooted... you will want to ensure that all programs (except norton) are turned off.. such as your browser.

You can check the startup to ensure things are not set to run ... Start >> Run >> type msconfig >> hit enter and look for any strange programs.. uncheck anything that's not Norton >> apply >> exit WITHOUT restarting

The hit CTRL + ALT+ DEL (once time only) which will bring up the Task Manager click task manager and look at the running processes
If you see any that are obviously an infection.. attempt to end task on them.. if you are not sure, leave it alone

At this point if you are certain Norton is completely updated and is configured to scan for viruses and spyware... do a complete scan... and you should be OK

also, in the future you may want to set up a guest log in with no admin privileges this way they cannot disable the antivirus and they cannot install programs.

Good Luck

Why do you want to waste your money with Nortons?. Nortons is a resource hog, not really good at finding and killing any virus. Plus if you want to remove Norton, (you only think it has been removed). Nortons, leaves over 375 fragments of files glued to your files, folders and registry. Takes special software to remove all of the mess.

Here is a program that I use from Beijing, China and the Government of China uses. They don't advertise, or allow their antivirus program to be tested with others. I can assure you that I have used their antivirus program for ten plus years and never had one virus.

Twister Trojan Antivirus is state of the art technology, that scan in real time in the background and will clean in real time any webpage you may open that has an embedded trojan.

Does not allow you to download Real Player, you will have to download the alternative of Real Player. Real Player when uploaded in real time for evaluation the antivirus program finds a trojan embedded in a hidden file that is traced back to the United States Army Intelligence, London, England.

Will upload any program that does not have a valid lic., or name of company for evaluation. Gives you the option to kill the program or allow after a real time scan and the program is clean.

There are so many features in this program that it would take much to long to name them all.

One thing I will tell you is that you only pay a one time fee for life, includes all automatic updates, and all new versions for life. Price is $29.99

Here is their webpage:

http://www.filseclab.com

If you like what you read purchase. I would never use any other antivirus program. And I am required by law to keep my pc 100% clean.

Yes, start with running Norton. Afterwards download, update and run scans using the following products. You can always uninstall them afterwards.:

SuperAntispyware
http://superantispyware.com/
Spybot S&D (free version requires manual updating)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
AVG AntiSpyware
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/20/lng/us/tpl/v5
Adaware from Lavasoft (free version requires automatic updating)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php

(These programs can be run in Safe Mode after downloading and updating)

Third, after cleaning your system, disable System Restore, reboot and re-enable System Restore when you log back on. This will clear the malware that may still be lurking in System Restore, which could be reinstalled should you need to rollback at some point. Additionally, a reboot may be required to complete the malware removal process. For reasons this should be done after and not before malware removal, see the webpage below:
http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2005/09/17/66724.aspx

Lastly, you may also want to install the following tool. It is free and requires you to check for and enable updates manually once a week or so. It uses no system resources.
SpywareBlaster (inoculates, not a spyware removal tool)

================================
If you cannot get it removed after the above, you may want to join a tech group that specializes in providing manual instructions on malware eradication.

Why pay when there are great free programs?

AV: Antivir PE, Avast or AVG.

Try Superantispyware and A-Squared Free 3.0 for spyware it appears you have.

If those don't work Google Smitfraud fix and Vundo fix for possible help.
