Whenever I see those Mac vs PC ads it makes me want to hate apple and never buy one of their products. They go on and on about how Macs are so much fun but PCs are boring.

I can think of many programs that won't run on a mac and I can do everything and more on my PC than a mac.

When they talk about having fun why don't they mention that there is basically no game support or good videocard support for apple computers?

Does this tick anyone else off?

Keep in mind that advertising is calculated to persuade customers to buy a product or at least get the product into your mind. While you find the ads annoying, others will find them funny/interesting. In any case, the ads have gotten attention to make people aware of an alternate product to Microsoft.

- "I can think of many programs that won't run on a mac and I can do everything and more on my PC than a mac."

Are other operating systems required to implement the Win32 framework? Are software vendors required to support multiple operating systems (MS Win32/64, Apple OSX, Linux (RH, Suse, Ubantu, Linspire, etc...), Solaris, AIX, HP-UX, PalmOS, etc...)? Software vendors will write for a target platform where they expect to get the best return for their investment. Ideally software vendors will code such that their software can be compiled to multiple target operating systems.

- "When they talk about having fun why don't they mention that there is basically no game support or good videocard support for apple computers?"

Since when are video games the only "fun" thing to do with computers? Besides, the number of games supported on Mac is increasing (link below for popular game titles like World of Warcraft, Sims, Battlefield 2142, and others).

On the video card front, you might be right there but probably less so for the new Intel based Macs. I have never owned a Mac but several of my coworkers do and they haven't complained about the video card, and most of them play games (World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy are the common games between most of them).

- "Does this tick anyone else off?"

I'm sort of neutral to the commercials. Initially I found them funny, but now I just ignore them. What I really find annoying are commercials that have songs that get stuck in my head. I also find some of the Microsoft "shills" that post questions/responses on Yahoo Answers to be annoying. There are a few that are highly suspect here (not implying you....haven't checked your Q/A history to form an opinion yet).

** Edit **
Kahless - Don't make the assumption that Macs are immune to viruses. All operating systems are subject to exploits. The virus protection vendors have written anti-virus software for numerous platforms. You may want to check the anti-virus library information a bit more carefully.

Disney Channel Sucks - If you spec a similar Mac and Dell PC, you'll find that the price difference is negligible between them for desktop systems. If you get into the Apple servers versus Dell servers, you'll actually find that the Apple servers are cheaper than a comparable system.

Can we get serious for just a minute.
Mac's and PC's are completly different animals.
Mac's were primarly designed for Audio, Photo, and Design and Studio, and motion picture work.
So you are dead wrong about videocard's and there support.
For gaming you are correct PC's have the gaming industry sowed up The reason is PC's are 85% of the personal computer market Mac's were not designed for Gaming using PC Gaming Software. SO you can not compare Apples to Oranges
The advertising you see is an attempt to get the dissatisfied PC users to think different, especially if they are sick and tired of crashes, and Viruses and all of the things that MAC doesn't suffer from.
Remember as well MAC only has 15% of the market.
Just understand they are completely different and both have there supporters and there detracktors.
So which ever you have and are happy with ENJOY but I would caution about throwing 2 big of rocks untill you find out all the info.

There is a little problem witth your question. First, a mac can run windows with boot camp- usually faster than a window computer too. You do hace to go out and buy windows, but then you can have os x and windows together. Also, Macs have great video cards.... look on the current iMac- a ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT graphics processor with 128MB of GDDR3 memory-that's a pretty good graphics card...

I actually liked the Mac ads because they were amusing, and I could relate to what to what they were saying.

Sure it's biased and aimed at noobs, but they are just trying to market their product. Plus if more people bought and used Macs then game vendors would be forced to make games compatible with the Mac, but at te moment it only has like 5-10% market share so they don't really give a damn.

Also Macs ave reasonable GPUs, however what's the point having a good GPU if there is no demand? (I mean there are few games for Mac).

If you don't like Mac and Windows switch to Linux and run wine.

BTW I'm a Windows XP user.

YES! Especially the way they act it out... its like their advertising to 12 year olds! And windows does have way more compatability in everything since it dominates like 95% of the market. I hate macs anyways because they are so INCREDIBLY overpriced - but what most people dont know is that they use the same parts as pc's just a different OS. And the mac OS is based on linux, wich is free, so if you want a mac, get a pc, install linux, and youve got yourself a DIY mac for 30% less.

Ya, I hate it. I mean, my friend has an Apple, and he believes it's better than PC, but I've been using PC all my life, so I'm so much more used to them. And you're right, there's better hardware and game support for PC. Apple needs to humble themselves a little. Plus, Apples are so expensive. You could get a halfway decent Apple for a little more than 1,000 bucks when you could get a PC that's twice as good for much less than that.

Well designed applications and operating systems should be easy to use in order to allow the user to get work done with the minimum of fuss. Just because you might need to be "tech savvy" to use Windows on a PC doesn't make the PC great for the average end user.

The fact that I have got 3 thumbs down votes for my comments so far must mean I must have got something right if a bunch of PC users are dis-agreeing with me.

I also notice that Apple has been one of the fastest growing companies on the NASDAQ since about January 2003 so they must be doing something right too.

The adverts have obviously worked and appealed to members of the PC owning crowd. Apple is continuing to grow at 3x the industry average which means that lots of PC users are buying Macs for the first time.
Not a lot of PC users buying Vista for the first time and a lot of Vista users are reverting back to XP which didn't happen when XP replaced Win2k even though people took a while to warm to XP.

Photography requires colour accuracy rather than 100+ fps.

For those who think Mac users don't know how to use Windows, I have WinXP running on Parallels on my iMac, previously I started out with Win98 before studying graphic design and "moving to mac" in 2000.

Many people prefer using Macs because they are a lot less fuss than Windows and non tech minded people like things that are easy - tech minded people like Macs because they can do the stuff they want to without worrying about the OS.

Let's see 115,000+ Windows viruses, no MacOs X viruses. Vista and XP run as well as or better on a MacBook Pro then on a PC. Maybe some people have fun on Macs because they are not downloading virus updates and scanning for viruses, malware/adware and trojans. If you don't like Macs & their advertising, fine, stick with a PC. If the ads irritate you that much, there must be a reason.

Macs are THE GOLDEN STANDARD in :
- any kind of design (house, landscaping, web, fashion)
- publishing
- audio/video editing
- architecture
- photography
Macs have best software and hardware for these professions
Linux is THE KING OF SERVERS ( FREE + rock solid, no viruses or any kind of junk written for linux, very secure)
Windows is for everything else
Since advertising is design+publishing that's why you always see Macs connected with them
That is just reality of life

Macs are overpriced, just as everything Apple puts out is.
