A shade tree mechanic learned his facts from doing the job. Trial and error till it's fixed. Most self taught mechanics are pretty sharp.
A certified mechanic went to school and took a written test to get a patch to wear on their uniform that says a.s.e. They may or may not know the ropes. Stay away from dealers, they charge the most and know the least.

shade tree, refers to the backyard mechanic. It slanged out from the fact that a lot of guys would pull their car under a shade tree to work on it. I came to mean any mechanic that worked from home or was a put down against poor mechanics in small shops. A certified mechanic means he has been factory trained, or received school training that meets or exceeds the level required by a manufacturer, such as chevy, ford etc and received the certificate to prove it.
