[11]
3x+2y=18....(1)
x+y=1.........(2)
From (2) we get
x=1-y
Substituting this value of x in (1)
3(1-y)+2y=18
3-3y+2y=18
-y=18-3=15
y= -15
Therefore,
x=1-(-15)
=1+15=16
x=16 andy= -15 ans

There are three methods for solving linear equations substitution, elimination and Gaussian elimination.
For this question elimination is the easiest.
let 3x+2y=18 be equation 1 and x+y=1 be equation 2.
Then times equation 2 so it has the same x or y value as equation 1.
equation 2*3 3x+3y=3
Equation 1 - equation 2
(3x+2y)-(3x+3y)=15 group like terms
(3-3)x+(2-3)y=15
-y=15
y=-15
Then substitute this y value into equation 2
x-15=1
x=1+15
x=16
Thus your solution is (16,-15)

First equation minus 3 times the second:

(3x+2y) - (3x+3y) = 18 - 3
-y = 15
y = -15

Sub y = -15 into equation 2 gives you
x = 16

3x+2y=18(mulitiply everything by 1)
x+y=1(mulitiply everything by 3)

3x+2y=18
3x+3y=3
(substract everything to get rid of the x so u can solve for y)
-y=15(divide by -1)
y= -15
now replace -15 for y in any equation
3x+2(-15)=18
3x-30=18
to sole the equation you should get the number (-30) over the other side which can be done by adding 30 to both side
3x-30+30=18+30
3x=48
divide by 3
x=16
so therefore y= -15 and x= 16

ELIMINATION

3x+2y=18
x+y=1 ------ 3x+3y=3

times second equation by 3
subtract first equation by second
(3x-3x)+(2y-3y)=(18-3)

-y=15
y=-15

sub -15 back in

x+(-15)=1
x=16

SUBSTITUTION
3x+2y=18
y=1-x

3x+2(1-x)=18
3x+2-2x=18
x=18-2
x=16

y=1-16
y=-15

3x+2y=18 (a)
x+y=1 (b)
multiply (b) by 2
2x+2y=2 (c)
(a)-(c) gives
x = 16 (so then y = -15)

2007-10-12 15:53:21 · answer #6 · answered by tsr21 6 · 0 0

3x + 2y = 18
- 2x - 2y = - 2----ADD
x = 16

16 + y = 1
y = - 15

x = 16 , y = - 15

x+y=1
x=1-y

3x+2y=18
3(1-y)+27=18
3-3y+2y=18
-y=18-3
-y=15
y=-15

x=1-y
x=1-(-15)
x=1+15
x=16
