I breastfeed my son, and I've always heard how a [new] baby knows who their mother is and how they recognize their mothers milk [and could supposedly pick it out of a crowd].
My question is:
For the babies who are formula fed - do they have the same connections with their mothers? Can they still pick their mother out of the crowd?
[my son is 3 months and I plan on breastfeeding him until he's 9-12 months]
I just don't want to lose any connection when I stop breastfeeding. When he is no longer breast fed - will he still be able to pick me out of the crowed?

[and for the babies who have NEVER been breastfed - can they pick their mothers out of the crowed?]

It's my first baby .. thanks :]

please dont listen to the idiot who said the baby won't know who you are. I have 4 children. 2 of them were breastfed and 2 had to get put on formula because for some reason I wasn't producing enough protein. My children always knew who I was. Sure breastmilk is best, but babies bond in other ways. Through all sorts of ways. Basically if babies only bonded by breastfeeding, how would they bond with their fathers?? I encourage you to keep up with the breastfeeding but please rest assured that your baby WILL know who you are. Good Luck and give that baby a big hug for me!!

YES !!! Breastfeeding is only one way of bonding...... Even if you bottle feed, you are holding the baby, and bonding. My babies knew me from the start. I have 3 children all bottle fed since i was unable to nurse. all are happy healthy with a very tight bond with me.

Not sure why a baby would have to pick its momma out of a crowd, i never let my babies out of my sight. My 3 month old doesn't like being held by anyone but me or daddy for very long.

I know I'm gonna get thumbs down because i am not a breast feeding mom....... but you really cant judge someone unless you have walked in their shoes.....

My baby wasnt breastfed as I found it difficult, painful, and frustrating. I always held her close during feedings and made eye contact with her just as if she were being breastfed. I dont think there was much difference and she preferred me to anyone else.
Breastfeeding is just a component of bonding not the only way to foster a good relationship with mom. I held my daughter all the time, I know she would be able to pick me out of the crowd.

Very young babies recognize the moms scent. The breastmilk helps, but they have also been exposed to Mom's scent and voice for months so even though it is not as easy formula fed babies quickly learn to recognize their parents. By about a month they can also recognize thier fathers and can use all of thier senses to recognize the parents whether breastfed of not.

Your baby will easily know you by 9-12 mos by sight, sound and smell. You will loose no connection! Bottle-fed babies also recognize (and when they say recognize scientists mean prefer) their mother's body scent as early as breastmilk flavor. There is also science to confirm that they recognize their mother's (and maybe father's) voice before they are even born! Aren't babies amazing?

Why would a baby be in a large crowd at such a young age?

Anyway, I didn't breastfeed, and my children knew who I was from day 1. They were best calmed when daddy or I held them instead of nurses or relatives. We had an instant bond with them. They slept better being rocked by us or soothed by us and I believe they definitely knew who we were. They were very content with me at all times. I can't imagine breast milk has affect on comfort or content with a babies mother. As long as they are fed, held, rocked, safe and loved a baby should recognize mommy always.

This goes for adopted babies as well. They feel the love and affection coming from adopted mommy. Babies know. Trust me.

Your bonding starts as soon as the baby is handed to you after giving birth. Yes, your child still knows your the mother, breast feeding doesn't matter, plenty of ppl don't breast feed their children. Breast fed babies are more healthier then formula fed babies. Your child will still know who you are....

Regardless of how a baby is fed, it knows it's mother. Well, at least if you are a good mother and spend time with the child and take care of it. I breast fed 2 out of 3 of my kids. Strangely though, I am much closer to the one that wasn't breast fed. Don't know why though.

Breast feeding asists bonding, but babies who are not b/f know their parents. They know their voices, smell etc. babies know their parents & sibling faces from a early age. Formula feeding does not mean a baby will not bond well, as you are still cuddling and nuturing them as much.
Try separating an 8 mth old from his Mum and watch him cry loudly.
