and the first thing people tell you to do is hire a lawyer? I mean if I were made of money being ripped for $900 or such wouldn't matter, but who can afford to pay a lawyer when they can't afford to lose $900? I hired a lawyer once, and it cost me over $300 just to get him to accept my case, in order for him to enter the courtroom he wanted an additional $360 so as you can see the fees add up quick. Whatever happened to justice? Is it only for the people who can afford to buy it? ;-(

I think you answered your own question there at the end buddy. Its the age of EBay justice and politics: To the highest bidders go the spoils...Get out your credit cards, checkbooks and billfolds folks! The blindfold on the lady justice is so that she cannot see reality or truth, and only comes off when the gold tilts her scales...

Small claims court for lawsuits under $5,000. The cost to initiate a suit is very small. You can hire a lawyer, but you don't have to, and it's designed to accommodate those with limited resources.

The only thing I can recommend, as in any lawsuit, make sure you have all your supporting evidence, i.e. documentation, pictures, witnesses, etc, in order. You still have to prove your case and just saying so don't make it so.

Also, as in any lawsuit, winning is one thing. Collecting is another. You may find yourself going back and having the defendant provide a Show Cause for non-payment, in which case he may end up under Contempt of Court. Funny how a little jail time will shake loose the money. But more often, you'll have to garnish his wages or put a lien against any property he holds.

I've been ripped off a number of times. Písses me off, but that's life. I've unintentionally ripped off others a few times. Nothing I can do to make it good, but it still sits on my conscience.

I'm not fond of lawyers (I work in the insurance industry) but they are not a charity. They have an office, expenses, employees and houses/cars to pay for. Even lawyers have to make a living. Granted...it's usually a very good living and a much better living then us lowly insurance folk....but they are entitled to make it.

Folks who like to holler "get a lawyer" are ignorant about how the system works. It does not annoy me...but I do get a chuckle out of it every now and then.
