They do not always do this, but if you see them doing it just know that they do not have a good grip on the ball and they are adjusting their hands.

The run counts. As long as the ball is live, the defense has the responsibility to make the out. If two of them get to scufflin', too bad for their team that they're being such nitwits. Besides, there's seven other guys out there who should be trying to make the play happen. Similar happened once to David Cone, who (while playing D) began arguing with an umpire while he was holding the ball. Time had not been called, and the runners advanced, at least one scoring. I recall something similar once happened in the late 1980s, I think the batter-runner was Mike Schmidt, and the defense simply fell asleep, then made a couple of bad throws, and he came all the way around on what should have been a routine play. (It may not have been Schmidt, and it was not the same incident as the Cone game.)

Actually they dont throw it back in the glove, they have the ball in their throwing hand all the time and they hit the glove to get a good grip on the ball and to get the ball more in to the hands to have a nice throw.
So basically it's just adjusting it's grip on the ball

Adjust their grip on the ball before making the throw. By doing this within the glove, there is much less risk of dropping the ball and muffing the play.

the reason they do that is to regain their balance and make a good throw...they dont throw it back in there glove they just tap the ball in their glove to make their throw in one smooth motion
