Why is that Shins song called "Know Your Onion!" if it never mentions an onion?

I love this song, but I have no idea why it's called Know Your Onion.

haha, I didn't know it was a bet, I always thought it was a deep song about finding and making yourself, so they used an onion as a metaphor because it has layers, ya know? Like layers of a person's identity. Maybe I read into it too much, but I still like the idea.

I don't know why, but I always assumed it was a twist on something like "Know your opinion"
