How old do you need to be in the US to have freedom of religion? I am atheist and can't stand living in a Jewish household and having my parents try to force their beliefs on me. My mom says US law states that I need to be 16 (I'm currently 13 1/2) before I can decide if I want to be Jewish or not. I think this is completely unfair since I don't even believe in "god" and I want to know if she is lying or not.

Thanks.

Sorry, freedom OF religion is not freedom FROM religion. Your in your parents house so you live by their rules.

Sixteen is when, under Federal law, when they can kick you out of the house and by doing so exercise their freedom of religion

Apparently, your mom isn't just trying to shove her religion down your throat, but she's also trying to lie to you about the law. I knew I didn't believe in god when I was 6, so you can believe whatever you want, whenever you want. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a few years to do whatever you want. If I were you, first thing I would do would be to get away from your manipulative mother. Good luck, kid!

You basically have no rights until you are an adult. If you don't want to believe in Judaism, nobody can change your true beliefs but if your parents say sit, you must sit, if your parents say in bed by 10 pm, you do it, if they say you must eat dinner at home every Friday night with your family for Shabat, you must do that too. But they can't tell you what you can or can not believe. That's impossible. You are your own person.

I thought once you reach 13, it signifies adulthood in the Jewish Religion.

Perhaps when you get 16, your parents will backoff and let you choose your own faith.

But your mother is doing what she is doing, because her faith means so much to her, and she loves you, so naturally she wants you to follow her faith.

No, you can decide now. You can't really stop them from making you come along with them to jewish services, but you only have to humor them, you don't have to believe anything. And then when you can drive and have your own car you can do what you want and it will be much easier

No one can make you believe in whatever ceremonies they might want to make you go to: that is up to you.

You can choose whatever religion you want when you reach the age of adulthood in your state, as you can with most everything else.

You may not adhere to your parents' philosophy or religion, but you need to show respect to your parents.

I recommend listening to Cheap Trick's "Surrender" from the "Live at the Budokan" album.

"Surrender, but don't give yourself away..."

Your mother is flat out lying to you, probably in order to get you to what she wants. I have studied the constitution and what your mother said is nonsense.

Just listen to your parents and at 18 do what you want.
