I always notice that there are always slang, shortcuts, and words spelled incorrectly on Y! Answers. It drives me crazy. How can I trust your answer when you spell words wrong or use slang? Example: "R" does not mean are, it is just a letter.

Someone actually sent me this EMAIL

" UR GUN@ H@VE @ RUDE @W@KEN!NG WEN U GUY$ PL@Y THE P@TR!0T$!! H@H@H@H@!!!!!!!!! "

Where are we going in this world if these messages become acceptable?

They sure the hell are killing english. I get e-mails that could well have been written by gerbils for all the sense they make and the spelling, even when they are trying to do it right, is awful.

I've questioned my grandkids about this and their answer is: "It saves time." Time for what? To get more stupid?

No. There will continue to be some of us who prefer to use real words that we know how to spell. That message you sent wasn't even close to being one of the worst.

The person who wrote that was just being silly on purpose. You can tell that because using @ in place of a lower case a is not a short cut of any kind. That takes two keystrokes in place of one. The same is true for the use of the ! and the $.

But so many of the questions and some of the answers on Yathoo! Answers show little or no evidence that the people writing them know any writing conventions, can spell, or know what a sentence is. You don't read those questions as much as you 'decipher' them. Maybe the best thing we can do is to not encourage them by answering them. It is a little disappointing isn't it?

English was always changing fast. After the dictionary it stalled and changed slowly. When people wrote letters by hand they w'ld abbreviate if they c'ld. This is called run length encoding. Symbols that are used more often become shorter.

Text messaging is a bandwidth limited channel. So more redundancy is lost. Claude Shannon who is considered the father of information theory said English was 50 percent redundant. You could puncture about half the letters and still convey your meaning securely.

So no, English is being perfected by instant messaging.

No, it is a fad and what lazy people do now. There is no need for it except on mobile devices since pretty much everyone knows how to type on a keyboard now.

There will always be people that are going to live in that abbreviated land but many others, myself included, will be judgmental and not take them seriously or simple ignore their posts/replies
.
For example when I see that type of message on several of the forums/bulletin boards that I frequently visit I rarely bother to answer or if I do make a point to tell them that they are presenting themselves in a poor light.

We aren't going anywhere with them because they will not become acceptable. Schools will not teach that type of communication and colleges will not allow it to submitted. Anyone who embraces that everywhere is only going to limit themselves to a smaller circle of people and knowledge.

Yes, texting is totally killing the English language. OK, that message that person sent you didn't make any sense (doesn't @ mean at?) English is hard enough for me so I am not even going to start making those bad habits. Have a nice day!

What a large question!! did you know that educators have been at the instant conversing approximately removing the practice of "handwriting" altogether as a results of fact of desktops?? Ridiculous!! did not take them long to realize babies might then under no circumstances be waiting to study handwriting. action picture star for you! Sandy

Not exactly killing, but changing it seriously. Languages are live and changing over time. Expect a huge change in the informal writing style.

And I can assure you: Internet is not killing only English. My brother kills the Portuguese constantly. Camoes, Shakespeare and many other writers are definitely groaning in their tombs.
