Does anybody have any good instructions or know a site that has good instructions on how to convert a fish tank to a vertical terrarium? I want to get a crested gecko and I know that they would rather have height then floor space. Would this be a good idea. Also does anybody have some good ideas for nice custom backgrounds? Can you feed crested geckos crested gecko diet only or should also feed them insects on a regular basis?

I mean like take a 20 gal horizontal fish tank and turning it on to it's side so it's taller than it is in length.

In order to change an aquarium into a crested gecko enclosure, you just need to thoroughly disenfect the aquarium. It really depends on the size of the aquarium. You can put one crested gecko into a 10 gallon tank and up to 2-4 in a 29 gallon.

As for custom backgrounds, do you mean like a paper background? If so you could possibly draw your own, or check online. If you mean inside the enclosure, similar to fake rock you can check the fake rock instruction link on this page:

You could use the basic instructions but build a background instead of hides and perches and whatnot.

Crested gecko needs primarily the Crested Gecko Diet, but they should also get crickets at least once a week. Babies, two or three times, as they are growing and need the extra protein. You can, also, feed them baby food (apricot, peaches, apples), once a week. It really doesn't have much nutritional value, but they like it. So, as a treat, it wouldn't hurt them.

The tanks I've seen that are standing on their sides always have homemade doors. I don't know of any pictures or instructions for making them though. A tall tank with a screened top works fine for cresteds....just have lots of climbing things in it for them. I use a crested gecko diet, mixed with a bit of fruit baby food, but my crested gets small crickets or other small insects (phoenix, silkworms, mealworms) regularly. Some only feed the diet, but mine loves to hunt so much, I'd hate not to give him insects.
