It's best to drive and get the puppy if you can- most reputable breeders will meet you half way. Shipping puppies via planes often causes it stress. They crate the puppy and the breeder shows the airline certain papers needed to know it is vaccinated- the puppy is the last thing on the plane (yes, it goes where the luggage does below) and it is the first thing off the plane since it is alive. It usually costs around $250 but it depends on the airline and where it is being shipped to. If you can drive or find a closer breeder, it's best to do so- also it's best to actually see the puppy before buying it because you need to make sure it is healthy and so are the parents.

It is best if you can fly down and pick him up but dogs can be (and are) successfully flown through the airlines all the time. At least it isn't summer when it is the most dangerous.
Try and get a direct flight. The breeder will have arranged for a health certificate and an appropriate carrier. Once you know the airline, you can check their website for more information about flying with pets. Airlines are getting better about this as it is so much more common.
It is stressful, no doubt, but I know many people who have gotten very nice dogs from a long distance away including internationally.
It is not true that you can only get a dog locally. It may be preferable but it is not a requirement these days. You do have to be careful and exercise due diligence before you send money but that is true in everything.
How exciting. It is great getting a new puppy.

I am an Army wife, and had to fly my lab from Utah to North Carolina. Make sure that you speak directly with the airlines being the prices change drastically. Also, there are certain times of the year they can fly cargo, as well as certain breeds. They recommend that they have no more then one layover, and have to have a certificate from a vet to fly as well as approved cages, bedding, food, etc. Vets used to recommend sedation, but now don't suggest it because of the affects of altitude. Being a small breed, most airlines will allow you to fly with your pet, under your seat for a small charge. Mine however, was close to $700 with the cage included because she is so large. Do your research, there are many airlines that have bad reputations with transporting animals. Mine though was fine, although a little traumatized! Good luck!

Most likely you should pick up at the airport, talk to the breeder shipping the pups to you for exact info. I presonally don't like the idea of shipping dogs or puppies on planes, this can be very stressful for them. If you can, you should make the drive to pick up the pups.

Continental Airlines is the best for transporting animals. I'm a zookeeper and we ship all our animals this way.
BUT...I have an uneasy feeling about the person you're getting this puppy from. Do you know any background about them? How did you meet?

Since he'll be such a little thing and can put him in a carrier. I've seen many people traveling with their pets...both cats and small dogs. They keep them in carriers that are small enough to carry on and stow under the seat.
But with him being a puppy...Not sure if he is trained to not 'go' in the carrier. That could prove to be unpleasant for fellow travelers and embarrassing to you. You might want to find that out.

Who knows. I would NEVER buy a puppy from someone that I have not seen or met face to face. It sounds like a typical crap breeder selling pups to anyone. Good breeders do not ship puppies, especially toy breed pups.

you can ship on any airline, but i would suggest either going to get him and flying home with him or having the breeder fly with him, because airline people are mean and i wouldnt trust them with my dog.
