Have melted, creating what they think will be a new sea passage, instead of using the Panama Canal? Who is going to claim that stretch of water? Canada?

It is a bit more south of the North pole at the top of Canada. Bush won't know ehre this is anyway! Don't get him involved. he will start digging for oil.

Yah pretty much, when it was just ice and snow and polar bears and of no real financial value it was Canada who patrolled it and looked after it so now that there is a new sea passage I dont see why it should suddenly be up for grabs. Its always been Canadian and always will be. Its part of the international boundaries as far as I know.

Actually Becky FYI basketball and baseball were first played in Canada, the black berry you are using is a Cdn invention, as is television, phones, and pretty much everything you use including metal bodied aircraft and the jet, all first pioneered in Canada - so be careful WHO you accuse of stealing things.

And while you are bashing Canada and Canadians I would like to remind you that Cdns are dying in the Middle East backing up YOUR troops, trying to clean up YOUR mess.

Grow up and try watching the news sometimes.

My apologies to others for going off like this, I am SO bloody tired of the younger generation bashing Canada. We have fought a few wars together, and covered each others butt and I am tired of this mud slinging and accusations from the uneducated -

Actually, Russia is in the process of claiming the North Pole. Canada, the U.S., Norway and a few others are contesting. Here is a write up of the phenomena of the melting ice caps done by NASA...

Hear, hear, Jilly! The loss of the polar bear is a tragedy, and many humans are only concerned about who's going to grab the territory first. This short-sightedness will cost the human race dearly. Believe it or not, we NEED the polar bears, and all the other species that we are losing due to climate change, because we are PART of the ecology and dependent on it for our lives.

Really I couldnt care about that at all!!!
For me the saddest thing about this is the decline of polar bear numbers!!!
The melting of the icecaps has seen a reduction in floating sea ice. The bears need this in order to hunt. This means the bears are literally starving to death and their numbers have sadly declined already.
How can we allow this to happen. How can we allow these majestic beasts to disappear from the earth. How????

The Northwest Passage is finally opening, and Russia wants it! Should we be surprised? Russia wants Alaska back, too.

Yes....I'm sorry.....but ice is supposed to melt. Like winter turns to spring.......I see it as a normal event. Kind of like nipping and tucking and lifting and pumping is going to stop a natural event? But the way things are going....who was first....who has the most....I suppose they could claim it. LOL

hard to say. it is the northwest passage and it lies between Russia and Alaska. it will not be open all year----yet. they used to walk across it on the ice. and Russia AIN'T getting Alaska back.
