It all depends on what you want to do in Wilmington and the surrounding areas. If you are into live music and visiting clubs go to downtown. UNC Wilmington is near so there are plenty of live music venues to suit that crowd. Wilmington is full of history from the American Revolution to WW II. Of course there is the beach. Beaches like Carolina Beach and Topsail offer great surfing opportunities along with sunning. Of course it is getting a little chilly so I would stick to fishing, historical sites, shopping, and the great restaurants . . . New Liver Pool Deli is on of my favorite. For shopping I would stick downtown for unique gifts. The cotton Exchange would be great for this and it also is home to a few great restaurants like Paddy's Hollow. Genealogy. If you know you have family from there then the fun thing to do would be to trace your family, and walk where they walked. Find out from the library about them. I have family (ancestors) from N.C. I think that would be fun.
