Snakes are not toys you throw away once you've gotten bored with them. They're animals. And whether snakes show them or not they do have feelings like all animals.

So the question is: are you willing to take care of the snake once you son has worn off the novelty? or are you willing to let that snake die when nobody cares about it anymore?

Trisha this is a good question. But as a parent it is a very tough one. I think that it is always good for children to have pets around. However I think it will be a bad idea if you don't want it. Snakes like all other reptiles need lots of care. Snakes have very specific diets and needs to stay alive. Corn snakes are a non-venomous, friendly snake. That don't grow too large and are very easy to maintain as many see it. Your right; snakes don't really do much but some corn snakes have been known to be playful. Trust your parenting instincts on this one. If you get the snake or not, they are great pets and easy to maintain. If you become interested please e-mail me and let me know. I will be more than happy to help answer any questions you may have.

Hope this helps.

Corns are a great snake for first time owners, but if your son is young, say less than a teen, YOU will be the care taker. They need specific requirements (not too difficult to set up) and must be fed mice on a regular schedule. I order frozen and then thaw them (the recommended method of feeding snakes) and mine are all good eaters. I'd recommend you register with this website, read the care sheets and ask lots of questions before finally deciding. They are interesting creatures and I don't find them boring. :)

How old is your kid?

"The Corn Snake was one of the first snakes to be kept in captivity of humans. Corn snakes are one of the most common snakes available in the pet trade due to their gentle nature, ease of care, low maintenance, manageable size, lack of fangs, non-venomous, and the wide variety of patterns, colors, and morphs available to choose from. These snakes are excellent escape artists and will escape their enclosure if not properly fastened."

Corn snakes can actually be very interesting pets. To get one you have to be willing to either buy mice(which are very expensive) or to breed them. Either way you have to kill them yourself, so you cant be squeamish. Snakes are cold-blooded, so they get their heat from other things like the sun or us. When snakes are cold, they are very sluggish, but as soon as they get warmed up they can move very fast. Watching a snake eat and shed skin is a very neat experience, and unless they are hungry you can pick them up and "wear" them. If they are hungry they may bite you. Its your decision to get a snake or not, but they are very interesting pets.

im not sure that this would be a great idea. snakes live much longer than hamsters and rodents. they can live for at least long enough to where he will get tired of it and will just want to get something else. try reccomending something else.
