portia's plea for mercy can be expanded to meet today's needs...

"The quality of mercy is not strained" can just filter into everyday life of the new century. Especially with Portia being a woman, and it can actually mirror the fact that women are basically still considered "second class" to men in any profession.

There is also the many many scenes with Shylock bargaining the one pound of flesh, as to reflect the high cost of "living" these days. Discussing the "Pound of flesh, and nothing more" aspect (once again referring to portia's plea) might help to open up discussion between major companies that dontrol your daily life and your financial situation (not referring to your particular situation but the situation of most Americans as a whole...)

What an interesting project....good luck!

Update it. Your city, the present time, modern dress. Shakespeare wouldn't mind.
