In the black-and-white, television-land world of Pleasantville, any reality, like physical loving, anger, curiosity, danger, beauty, strong emotions and independent thought causes color to awaken.
That's the whole point of the movie. The "ideal" world of the tv series isn't really ideal at all, because it's missing the reality that gives it beauty and life and meaning.

The people are growing and changing, experiencing things they have never experienced that change a deep part of themselves. Some people turn color after fooling around in a car while others change reading a book, choosing their education over sex, or finally admitting an emotion they had hidden inside.
Its pretty cool actually. I suggest you watch the movie again and try to determine what the the turning point for more of the characters. =]

Well it wasn't always sex. It was really people changing their ways. Discovering something they never had discovered before. For example, Mary Sue had to read a book and truly appreciate it for her to turn color. Bud punched a guy in the face for coming after his mother, when he had never been violent before, and then he turned color. The mayor became unpleasant, and he turned color. I'm guessing the things in nature around them changed purely as a result of the people closest to them creating a change in the environment. Those things didn't seem to be as controlled.
Hope that helps..

Things started turning to colour when the people started feeling emotions that weren't scripted into the show.
Like anger..and sexual passion..and rebellion.
They were starting to be their "own" person..and not just a character with lines from a tv script.
