"The US had 1st place on lockdown" LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Had USA not won in Honduras, USA does not qualify. That was the 2nd to last game. How is that on lockdown? Mexico 3 Costa Rica 0 - In Saprissa Mexico 4 El Salvador 1 Mexico 1 Honduras 0 Mexico 2 USA 1 These were the games that the Aguirre team won the 2nd half of qualifiers. The one bad game was only days after Aguirre was announced as the new coach. He was given 3 days to go into El Salvador and prepare. Mexico and Chile are going to surprise the world. These teams are doing great right now. As long as they can stay healthy.

The head to head match at home shows Mexico is a fortress at home (lost 1 out of 23)
At home the US wins about a third of games.

From the head to head results Mexico is better. Mexico also has better FIFA rankings most of the time.

Team MP W D L GF GA
Mexico 23 21 1 1 74 15
USA 31 13 9 9 45 43

I believe that Mexico is better than the U.S., but only slightly. Both teams are literary at almost the same level, so the only determining factor is who has the home-team advantage.

If we're going to talk in terms of history though, Mexico clearly still holds a lead, and it does matter because I don't think that the U.S. could consider itself truly better unless they beat Mexico by at least 3-0. (A score that Mexico imposed on the U.S. while the U.S. played at home in early 2000, before the U.S.'s rise.)

In terms of players and leagues, Mexico yet again holds a better advantage because Mexico's league is much more superior to the MLS. The only way for the MLS to rise would be to fix its playoff system and also to change the schedule, so that it would run more accordingly with the schedule that most of the world follows. Donovan couldnt get off the bench with Bayern Leverkusen, and the only players that have made a mark in Europe are Bocanegra, Dempsey, Beasley, Keller and Howard. Im sure that Freddy Adu will be able to make a mark with Benfica that he couldn't make in the MLS, and the U.S.'s younger players in Europe will also do good, but Mexico's foreign players are also doing good. The Mexican Primera is more competitive and considered one of the strongest outside Europe. UNAM Pumas beat Real Madrid 3 years ago, Pachuca won the Copa Sudamericana and since 2000, teams like Chivas, America and others have gotten really close to the Libertadores. Mexico's top players like Sanchez, Luis Garcia, Aguirre, Marquez, Salcido, Castillo, Pardo, Osorio, and future stars like Dos Santos, Vela, Guardado, Ochoa (who will most likely move to the EPL by this year's end) and others are making or have already made a mark in European football.

If we're also going to talk about competition with other teams, Mexico again fares better than the U.S. As of right now, the U.S.'s main claim to fame is that they can beat Mexico at home and in WC '02. That's it. No Brazil, no Argentina, no Italy, no Germany, nothing like that. Mexico however has not only played exciting games against countries like the ones I've mentioned, they've also beaten them (Brazil in Confederations '99 and '05, Argentina in Copa America '04, and they've tied Italy twice in WC '94 and '02).

The problem with measuring both of them when they're up against each other is the same problem that Brazil and Argentina have, there is just too many emotions going on between each team. The rivalry is just so heated that at the end, neither team is able to show its best and the score is what it is part luck and part home-team advantage. Like I said, look at Brazil and Argentina, Brazil wasnt playing with its stars, and Argentina was the obvious favorite to win the Copa America, but the rivalry between each country was just too strong for one side and the other capitalized on it.

Im not being impartial, Im literary looking at all the facts that I can look at and showing my verdict. The U.S. needs to raise the level of its league, and the tactics that they use if they want to get better than what they already are as of right now.

I think the two are about even. At this point, I think that (as shown by recent results, not results from the 1980s) home field determines who is most likely to win. They haven't faced each other often enough on neutral turf in games that matter in recent years to be able to truly tell who is better. Long-run, I think the trend is going in favor of the U.S. If the U.S. ever got a coach with imagination and did a better job of scouting young talent (especially among recent immigrants), I think they would become clearly superior. As is the use of plodding English tactics by the U.S. keeps the two teams close.

mexico is better at the moment.
if US is serious about developing football/soccer, US will be on top very soon.

if US's best athletes play soccer, US could be the best team in the world. however, US people doesn't care about soccer. their best athletes are in other sports.

mexican really like their soccer....so they give a damn of how they perform against another country....but as for the US, only a small percentage of them even know "football" has a different meaning outside of america

To Liverpool... Usa, even if they capitalize football... they still wouldn't be good... they're worthless... the only thing they're good at is at American football or Baseball... maybe Ice Hockey.. who knows... but football? lol... they don't have atlethes for this kind of sport...

Mexico is 10 times better... they got to the Final quarters... although they were beated by one of the best, if not the best, football team in this world... yeah.. you know which team I'm talking about...

I believe they are equal. It comes down to where they play. If they play in the United States, the US have it in the bag. If its in Mexico, they have it secured. No ifs ands or buts
