I have seen people ask about Dell laptops, and an answer I continually see is "Don't buy Dells the used to use exploding batteries, buy a Toshiba instead." Now there are two things about that I don't understand, firstly, Toshiba issued a recall because they were using those same exploding batteries made by Sony, so recommend them over Dell? And secondly, why the heck does it matter what either company used to use, neither uses them now. Can anyone else make any sense of this logic?

You're right, it isn't logical. But you know how some people tend to latch on a temporary flaw in a thing or a theory and blow it up out of all proportion. The latest issue of Consumer Reports rates the Dell laptops as first or second in both "budget" and "workhorse" categories, and as "quick picks" in all four groups. Toshiba came second in the budget category, but didn't do very well in the workhorse category. Dell's technical support came third in consumers' ratings, behind Apple and Lenovo (IBM), and has been average in terms of repair history between 2003 and 2007. Dell and Apple have the best recycling options. There was no mention whatsoever about battery concerns. I've got a Dell Dimension C521 desktop that I'm quite happy with, and I would probably go with Dell for a laptop, if I ever wanted to get one.

Ok, as one guy has already said, go to newegg.com and look for the laptops with the MOST, BEST reviews from happy customers,.. but, in addition that, if you weren't going to, I suggest you ALSO read the reviews in depth so you can find out WHY people liked or disliked a product,.. I got my current machine from all seperate components; ok so it's a tower with its relevant parts, but because I went to newegg and other PC sales sites with reviews I cross-referenced all the parts I wanted and now I have a kick-a** tower that works and is, so far, (touch wood), reliable; no headaches to maintain which was also a dream to build.
So, in summing up,. do check for reviews of laptops, READ what's being said, take note, think long and hard WHY you want the laptop; for example someone may say why that particular one was right for their needs.
Go forth, read, learn, observe, and make an educated guess as to what you want to buy; get the wad of moolah out then know that you will have bought a FINE laptop - I doubt any of them will be a Sony, Dell or a Toshiba! ;)
Good luck!

never knew psychotics made much sense !

the apple class 'sheep phenomena' is one way of putting it
apple, apple and only apple
windows sucks ... yuck

just as we have the vociferous hate vista brigade

just to make my point, an apple fella can tell you very little about windows and even less about apple, when you confront him
same for the vista brigade

same phenomena goes for the "don't touch the exploding dell, get toshiba"
these fellas know very little about dell, and even lower about toshiba
except maybe that these breed own a toshiba, like the apple sheep have an apple

having answered pretty many laptop questions myself, i too find this utter and sheer NON-SENSE
and as you can see for self, our computer guru is THE PRIME proponent

despite receiving repeated criticism, he is pretty oblivious of facts, and crowning glory is 'top contributor' > laptop category

I think Dell makes excellent laptops within affordable price range.

Its not Logic. So you can't make sense of it. Just go on newegg.com and find a laptop that fits your needs and has good reviews.
