You need to understand how markets work to assure that products you want are available when you want to buy them without the need of anybody directing the system

You need to know how to fit yourself into the system and why it is that some occupations are well paid and what they are and how to prepare for one.

You need to know how financial institutions and markets work so you can understand how to borrow and invest money.

You need to understand how the government interacts with the economy, and that all government activities and programs are paid for with taxes and that it is not just the amount but also what is taxed that matters.

You need to understand that in a complicated systems like the economy all actions produce a reactions or unintended consequences .

So that you can compete with your economic rivals, plus in order to live prosperously and financially comfortable, you have to know the economy of your country and how it works.
