Finding windows and doors unlocked and opened is not a sign of casing. It is beyond that--this is a sign the casing (watching and determining your patterns) is over and done. Your house has been promoted to a house to be burglarized or "hit on" as the tv shows say.
Inexpensive systems can be purchased over the internet and also at some Home Depots. They are easy to install, but take patience in reading ALL the instructions so that you can install a system that will please you.
Make sure you also purchase window breakage alarms. Usually one alarm will cover about 500 square feet. These are opporated usually by sudden and abrupt pressure changes associated with breaking a window open. They will not falsely go off due to merely opening a door.
Make sure you purchase or have installed very very loud siren alarms that can be heard by neighbors at leaset 10 houses down the street.
When our system was not being monitored, a friend of ours gave us a few extra stickers they got from their alarm company to put in our windows. Instead of the generic, fake monitoring stickers sold on the interenet, ours was by a real nationally known company that any potential burgler would recognize.
Finally, this is one THE BEST tips I got from a policeman when he was doing the report on our home after it was burglarized:
Put a five or ten dollar bill and some pocket change on a table in your entry way and at the back of the house on a table by a back door. He said that a burglar will see the money and will pick up the $5 or $10 bill 95% of the time and that if you ever enter your house and see the bill missing, just turn around and walk right back out of the house and call the police to check your home before you go inside.
Hope this helps

No, they aren't casing the place, they have been in the place and know exactly what's there. Check your valuables to see if they are still around.
A big dog is the best deterrent, but a motion activated system that links voice to a monitoring room is next best. If they enter and trip the alarm the police are called and they hear a live person's voice telling them the police are on the way and to leave.

It sounds like they have already broken in, and are not caring the place anymore. The best way to keep them out is to make sure your windows are closed (the glass windows, not just the screens) and make sure the doors are locked. Thieves are lazy. They would rather look for an easy target than to try to find a way into your house. And if they are really determined to get in, you probably cannot stop them.

Umm, are you renting? Did your landlord by chance come spray and leave the windows open? That would really upset me... You may want to check that if your renting... if that is not it.. I'd get a dog for sure. They make these little boxes you can buy that hook to your windows and if someone opens your window it sounds an alarm. It spooks thieves. Those you can buy and install yourself. They make a loud enough sound to alarm the neighbors if you keep fresh batteries in them. Keep safe!

A good dog is the best security system. Tell your neighbors to listen for your dog when you are not home. They are great companions and you can get out of the house and take them for a walk daily and get a chance to meet your neighbors!

if you are living alone, then somebody has broke into your house! if you are living with your family, maybe they forgot to close the window and lock the front door! that is the best possibility. OR you forgot to close your window and unlock the front door!

before each and everything, if I walked as a lot as my living house and said blood, i might want to call 911, then i might want to watch for the police. My toddlers would not be in there with out me, and my husband can cope with himself in any situation, so if someone become bleeding, likely that is the fellow that broke into my living house. i might want to stay at a neighbor's living house til the police officers confirmed up.
